How Leaving a Cracked Tooth Untreated is Dangerous

Posted on 2/20/2017 by Beautiful Smiles Office
A woman suffering from a cracked tooth!
Having a cracked tooth in your mouth typically is quite painful. The pressure of biting down can open the crack, and that can pinch the nerve of the tooth inside the crack, causing a lot of pain. However, there are times where there is no pain associated with a cracked tooth.

You can chew, talk, drink, and go about life without even realizing it's there except the occasional twinge of pain. Nothing in your mouth should be painful when it is in good shape, so even that occasional twinge should be checked out.

Have All Mouth Pains Checked Out

If you do not go in and have that bit of pain checked out right away, you may have a cracked tooth that you do not know about until it is infected. The problem with a cracked tooth is that it sits open, even slightly, and debris can fill in that crack.

No matter how well you brush, floss, rinse, and tend to your mouth, debris that gets into a miniscule crack is not going to come out completely. As that debris decays, it is going to take the tooth along with it.

This is also going to affect the nerves in the tooth, and it could cause an infection in the tooth that may lead to an abscess. It is never a good idea to let even minor pains of the mouth go unchecked.

If you realize that you may have had that little twinge of pain a while back, then you need to call our office and go in to be seen. Your dentist will likely take an x-ray to see if the tooth has a crack in it where they cannot see, and decide on what type of treatment the tooth needs from there.
