Two Problems That Often Accompany Exercise That Can Harm Your Oral Health

Everyone knows that exercise is not only good, but it is also important for those who want to remain healthy and live a long life. However, there are some aspects to exercise that can leave you struggling to maintain your oral health if you are not made aware of them. If you exercise regularly, keep these things in the back of your mind to be able to protect the health of your teeth and gums.

Drinking Sports Drinks Is Dangerous to Your Mouth

Sports drinks are a disaster waiting to happen for your teeth. They add in processed salt, not really offering much nutritionally for the electrolytes you have lost, and then they add in processed sugar, adding to the damage they do to your teeth.

However, the biggest offender of the sports drink is how much acid it adds to your mouth. This can quickly cause damage to your teeth and leave them reeling from the pain. Instead, drink coconut water and tap water. They will help your mouth and allow your body to recover from the exercise naturally.

Breathing with Your Mouth Open Can Increase Your Cavity Chances

When you breathe with your mouth open, it dries out your mouth. This means there is less saliva protecting your teeth. This, in turn, causes your chances of developing cavities to increase dramatically.

In order to stop this, you must consciously make an effort to breathe through your nose during exercise. It helps cut the chances of developing cavities down, and it forces you to focus on your breathing when working out.

To help protect your mouth further when you regularly work out, make sure you also see your dentist. He or she can look around inside your mouth and make sure everything looks good and healthy, just like you want with your body.

Please contact our office if you have any questions about exercises effects on your oral health.
