Root Canal Therapy
One of the most common restorative procedures we perform here at Beautiful Smiles is root canal therapy. These are a great method for restoring deep damage or decay within a tooth to avoid extraction and to keep the natural integrity of your tooth. This procedure is often completed with the use of a crown, which will further support your tooth. For more information, give us a call today.
What is a root canal?
A root canal is a simpler and more commonly used name for root canal therapy, a restorative procedure that focuses on clearing decay and damaged from the root canals of your teeth. This is similar to when we fill cavities. However, it requires a bit more of an in-depth process and delves much deeper into your tooth.
Why do I need a root canal?
Root canals are a great option for us to avoid having to extract your tooth. Sometimes infection or decay goes much deeper than the surface of your tooth. This can cause issues in the pulp of your teeth, which can cause much pain because that is where your nerves are located in your tooth. For us to save your tooth and keep the issues from spreading, we need to clear out the area. This means a more in-depth procedure that delves much deeper into the base of your tooth to remove the pulp and clear abscesses. This not only gives us the chance to clear out the nasty substances that have collected at the base of your tooth but also allows us to seal these passages so that the decay or infection cannot come back.
When you come in for your root canal, you may find yourself stressed or apprehensive, but we assure you, you are in very capable hands. The first thing we are going to do is to give you an anesthetic, whether that is a local or general is up to your needs. Then, we will separate this tooth from the others using a dental dam, which gives us a clear direction to go. Then we will drill a hole in the top of your tooth to grant us access to the roots. We will clean the area thoroughly, removing all decay and infection. When your tooth is cleared out, we will seal the passages and holes that we just made with a medicated dental material so that the infection cannot return to the area or spread beyond the tooth. After that, we will prepare your tooth for a crown.
