What is an Ankylosed Tooth?

Posted on 10/24/2022 by Beautiful Smiles Office
What is an Ankylosed Tooth? What does it mean if a tooth is ankylosed? Well, ankylose is an oral condition where a tooth becomes one with the bone as a result of losing its ligament. In medical terms, ankyloses mean stiffness of a joint due to a disease or trauma. This condition is more common with young children who are yet to replace their baby teeth with permanent teeth. This is usually because the permanent tooth is blocked by the baby tooth from erupting from the gum.

What are the Signs and Effects of Ankylosed Tooth?

The common cause of ankyloses is dental trauma that damages the root of your tooth. The most commonly ankylosed teeth are primary molars in the lower mandibles. Diagnosis of an ankylosed tooth is made through x-rays, clinical exams, and computerized tomography.

A dentist or an orthodontist can identify an ankylosed tooth through a visual exam. The ankylosed tooth will appear shorter than the rest as though sinking back to the gum. Ankylosed teeth cause misalignment of upper and lower teeth. Ankylosed teeth also result in functional and aesthetic dysfunctions. It may also result in the loss of neighboring teeth due to cavities. A patient might also be prone to gum (periodontal) disease.

Treatment and Prevention

How do you treat an ankylosed tooth? In truth, treating ankylosed teeth can be challenging. Several options such as osteogenic distraction, surgical luxation, tooth extraction, prosthetics, and implants can be explored. Once the diagnosis has been made, dentists may advise having the tooth removed. Early treatment helps promote recovery of the lost space as well as creating more space for the eruption of a permanent tooth. However, dentists advise against the extraction if the tooth is permanent.
