What to Know about Chewing Gum and Jaw Pain

Posted on 12/19/2022 by Beautiful Smiles Office
What to Know about Chewing Gum and Jaw PainJaw pain can be lessened or worsened, depending on your habits or the foods you eat. Some habits can worsen jaw pain for a patient. These habits include chewing on ice or an object, such as a pen, or chewing gum regularly. While gum is fine to chew after you eat a meal and cannot brush your teeth, making it a habit can worsen any problems you have with TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the jawbone to the skull. It is located just in front of the ears. If you have a problem with alignment or are under stress, this joint can be affected.

Why You Should Refrain from Chewing Gum

If you have TMD and chew gum too often, you can cause your jaw to become sore and difficult to open and close. If you do not want this to happen, you may want to find a substitute for chewing gum. It may be better to let a sugarless mint dissolve in your mouth. Do not chew on the mint, as doing so can affect jaw comfort as well. Whenever you overburden your jaw or cause it to be overworked, you will make any jaw pain worse. Therefore, dissolving a mint in your mouth may prove to be a better alternative to chewing gum.

Stay Away from Anything Too Chewy

Besides gum chewing, it is better to refrain from chewing on anything too chewy, including taffy, caramels, and candies like Tootsie Rolls. You also want to abstain from eating too crunchy foods, such as popcorn or tortilla chips. In the interim, we will examine your jaw and investigate the issue. While we treat the problem, make your motto – "Do Not Over Chew."
