Oral Health And Menopause

Posted on 4/10/2023 by Beautiful Smiles Office
Oral Health And MenopauseOral health is the general health of the teeth, gums, and the entire oral system that allows us to chew, smile, laugh and speak. Menopause is the physiological changes and the cessation of menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months or more in women. The teeth are susceptible to any hormonal changes. Therefore, it is essential to maintain good oral hygiene. Things you need to know about oral health and menopause include the following.

Burning Mouth Syndrome

As a result of the radical hormonal changes occurring in the body, a woman becomes susceptible to oral discomfort. Complaints of moderate to severe burning sensation in the tongue, loss of taste sensation, and lips arise. The mouth and lips become supple and sensitive. Sour and salty foods and vegetables have a burning effect on the mouth and tongue. Therefore, it is important to visit a dentist for checkups and treatment that can handle the changes.

Hypo Salivation

This is the dryness that occurs in the mouth because of a limited supply of saliva from the salivary glands. The changes and fluctuations of hormones cause a reduced salivary flow rate during menopause. Saliva is used in the digestion of food and drinks in the mouth. It is, therefore, difficult to chew when there is little saliva in the mouth. Considering these facts, it is important for patients heading toward menopause or currently experiencing it to know how it affects their oral health. A dentist will advise a routine to follow to avoid menopause-related complications like periodontal diseases and tooth decay.

Summary

Generally, women going through menopause and those close to menopause have a risk of going through the effects of hormonal changes. The effects can affect oral well-being, so it is advisable to visit a dentist to curb the effects.
