Causes of Tooth Erosion And Symptoms

Posted on 6/5/2023 by Beautiful Smiles Office
Causes of Tooth Erosion And SymptomsTooth erosion refers to the process by which the outermost part of the teeth, the enamel, is washed away by acidic contents in the mouth. Unlike tooth decay or cavities, dental erosion agents include acidic foods and drinks and excessive vomiting by the patient.

Dental erosion is prevalent in people who experience dry mouths as there lacks sufficient saliva to flush away acids from the enamel. This gives acids enough time to make contact with the teeth wearing them away progressively.

Symptoms of Tooth Erosion

One of the noticeable primary signs of worn-out enamel occurs when a person experiences sensitivity when eating or drinking cold or hot food and beverages. You may notice sharp pains when eating ice creams or sipping hot coffee, which causes discomfort.

The enamel is naturally white hence our teeth's color. The inner part of the dentin is characterized by yellowish color; hence when the enamel is worn out, you experience tooth discoloration. Often due to the visibility of the yellowish dentin part.

The enamel is strong and hard to break; hence serves as the barrier and protects the inner tissues and capillaries from external damage. Tooth erosion exposes the inner parts of the teeth to agents of chipping and cracking, especially during chewing and grinding food.

Causes of Tooth Erosion

Bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar content left on the teeth and tongue. When these bacteria are left unattended or flushed out, they tend to wear away the enamel, causing tooth erosion. Furthermore, drinking beverages rich in acidic contents exposes our teeth to agents of tooth erosion as the acids weaken the enamel over time.

People who like to grind their teeth are most reported to experience tooth erosion. Additionally, overbrushing wears down the enamel, especially when done for long periods.
