Bone Grafting and Dental Implants

Posted on 10/15/2023 by Weo Admin
Image of dental implant and molar. Bone grafting and dental implants can be performed together to address various issues. Before installing a dental implant, a dentist must check your jawbone's bone density and mass. If the jawbone has insufficient mass or volume, they must first perform bone grafting to stimulate your jawbone to grow and increase in size and volume.

Bone Grafting

This surgical procedure is used to replace a bone that has been resorbed or lost due to things such as gum disease or tooth extraction. When you lose a tooth, the surrounding bone will deteriorate over time since the tooth's root is not stimulating.

Bone grafting involves adding bone-like materials or bone to the affected area. The grafting material helps to stimulate the growth of your bone. The graft material can be obtained from other healthy bones, donors, or animals. It can also be obtained from artificial materials which mimic your bone structure and stimulate bone growth.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are posts that are securely attached to the jawbone. For the process to be successful, a dentist must ensure that you have ideal bone volume and mass. Bone grafting will be suitable if there is marked bone loss in the jaw. The procedure will be performed before the placement of a dental implant. Bone graft healing usually takes 3-9 months. The recovery will depend on the type of graft that is placed and your overall health. After a dentist is sure that the bone grafting site has adequately healed, they can attach the implant.

Implants such as dentures, bridges, and crowns are placed on your jawbone to support your replacement teeth. These long-lasting dental tools mimic your natural teeth and allow you to chew and grind food more naturally. But for dental implant placement to be successful, you must have adequate bone volume and mass which will be achieved through bone grafting.
