I Haven't Visited A Dentist In Years. What Should I Do?

Posted on 11/15/2023 by Weo Admin

It is an essential part of their health plan. However, researchers estimate that more than a third of all American adults have not visited a dentist in the last five years. Nearly 20% of American adults have not visited a dentist in more than 10 years. Some adults have never been to the dentist at all.

If you are one of those adults who haven't been to the dentist in a while, take heart. There are some steps you can take to make your dental visit less traumatic.

First, Find a Sympathetic Dentist

Your first priority is to find a dentist who will understand why you haven't been visiting. Be honest. If you haven't gone to the dentist because you are afraid, you need to let the dentist know. Be sure to explain your fears. Schedule an appointment for a consultation, so you can find a dentist who can understand dental phobias. Look for a dentist who offers sedation alternatives to help calm your fears.

Second, Take a Visit Ahead of Time

You will feel more relaxed on your next dental visit if you plan a consultation ahead of time. Many dentists will feel perfectly comfortable talking to you and taking a preliminary look at your teeth if it has been a while since you had your teeth cleaned. Dentists are aware of phobias, and many amazing dentists will take great pains to make sure you feel comfortable about your visit.

Take Your Dental Cleaning in Stages

If you have a phobia of the dentist, you may want to have one part of your teeth cleaned at a time. A dentist could start by cleaning your upper teeth on one visit and your lower teeth on another visit. No matter how you choose to visit the dentist, both your physical and dental health will be better when you do.
