While you should have had an exam during your pregnancy to check on the overall health of your mouth, that does not mean you can skip the one after delivery. Your dentist needs to be able to check and make sure your mouth has returned to normal.
Going in for a Postpartum Dental Visit
The first thing your dentist is going to want to do is to clean your teeth and do a very thorough examination of your teeth. They want to see how your teeth have held up to the demands of pregnancy, plus see if there is any lasting damage from the hormones or the morning sickness (if you had it).
Then, they are going to want to check on the health of your gums. Bleeding is never something you want with your gums, but it is a common side effect of pregnancy. Most of the time, it disappears by the time you have recovered from delivering your bundle of joy. However, when it doesn't, it needs to be addressed to help keep your mouth as healthy as possible.
It doesn't take much to go in and see your dentist after delivering your child. You can make the appointment around the same time as your postpartum checkup from your physician, so you only need to have one day of getting someone to help keep an eye on your new baby.
That way, your dentist can make sure you are healthy, and they can do what you need done to keep you that way. Contact our office today and schedule your postpartum checkup now!
