Is Changing Veneers a Painful Process?

When you get dental veneers, it is considered a permanent alteration. Meaning, when your veneers no longer function properly or get knocked loose somewhere down the line, you will need to have them replaced. A lot of people are nervous about this because they worry that removing the old veneers is going to hurt. Most people feel that the changing of veneers isn't any different or more painful than getting veneers in the first place.

The Process of Changing Veneers

The process for changing veneers is relatively straightforward. It involves removing the old veneer substance from your teeth. Then, your dentist may need to recontour your teeth so that the new veneers will fit evenly. Then, a mold is created for the new veneers, which gets sent off to the lab so they can be created. During the interim, your dentist will place temporary veneers over your teeth to keep them protected. Once your new veneers come in from the lab, you will be called back in and the permanent veneers will be placed, adjusted, and secured into place. This entire process is often no more painful, or even uncomfortable, than the first time you had your veneers put on.

Your veneers should last you anywhere from 5-15 years, depending on how well you take care of them. After you get the veneers, you need to keep brushing, flossing, and rinsing like you did without veneers. It is very important that you keep up with this routine if you want your teeth and veneers to stay strong. The more careful and caring you are to your veneers, the longer they should last. Once their time is up, you will simply need to have your veneers replaced. If you have had your veneers for a few years, talk to your dentist about how well they're holding up.
