Is Daily Mouthwash Really a Necessity?

Posted on 10/15/2018 by Beautiful Smiles Office
Is Daily Mouthwash Really a Necessity? There are so many decisions to be made when it comes to your oral health care. What kind of toothbrush works best for you? Hard, medium or soft bristled? Do you prefer a natural bamboo handle or a plastic electric handle with replaceable heads?

When it comes to floss, do you prefer waxed or non-waxed, flavored or plain? And don't forget toothpaste, the aisle at the grocery store can be overwhelming with choices! As long as you're choosing an American Dental Association approved one, you're in the clear.

And then you round the corner and you're face to face with the mouthwash aisle. Blues, greens and brilliant reds, do you prefer a medicinal flavored one or something a little more refreshing? So many choices, do you even need mouthwash?

Choosing What's Right For You

Deciding whether or not you even need a mouthwash is a topic we can discuss at your next cleaning or regular checkup. Our staff can help you decide if adding a mouthwash to your daily oral health care routine is right for you. Additionally, we can help you narrow down your choices, because honestly, there are only two basic categories of mouth rinses available; cosmetic and therapeutic.

Cosmetic mouthwashes can be a refreshing addition to your dental routine, but they do little more than mask bad breath and leave behind a pleasant taste. They are a temporary fix, but generally speaking, do not kill bacteria.

Therapeutic mouthwashes can be purchased over-the-counter; however, some of them even require a prescription from our dentist. They contain cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorhexidine, essential oils, fluoride and peroxide. These ingredients not only reduce bad breath, they help control plaque and gingivitis. Fluoride is proven in helping to prevent decay and peroxide is a tooth whitening agent.

So while mouthwash is not required for a healthy mouth, it's recommended as an aide in keeping your teeth healthy and strong. Give us a call today and we'll be happy to help you choose the mouthwash that is right for you during your next appointment!
