What Happens to Your Teeth When You Are Stressed Out?

Posted on 4/10/2019 by Beautiful Smiles Office
What Happens to Your Teeth When You Are Stressed Out?Stress can do a real number on your body. You probably already know that it can raise your blood pressure and put you in a horrible mood, but did you know that it can also damage your teeth and gums?

Stress can impact your oral health in a number of different ways. Some of these issues are minor, while others need more care.

Canker Sores and Cold Sores

Two of the less concerning signs of stress are canker sores and cold sores. Canker sores are little spots that appear in your mouth. They're usually a gray or white color with a red ring around them. No one is quite certain what causes these canker sores, but they do seem to appear more often when you're stressed out. Fortunately, they're harmless and will go away on their own.

Cold sores or fever blisters also tend to appear when you're feeling stressed. They're caused by a virus that, once in your body, never leaves. Fortunately, it won't really do much besides cause these sores to appear when you're under a good amount of pressure. Like canker sores, cold sores usually heal within a week without any treatment, although there are some over-the-counter medications you can use to heal them up more quickly.

Bruxism

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is more serious. When you're under a lot of stress, you may start to clench your jaw or grind your teeth against each other as an unconscious way of releasing some of that tension.

While you can make yourself stop if you do it during the day, you can't control this clenching while you sleep. If you wake up with a sore jaw, it's likely a sign you're stressing out and grinding your teeth at night.

If you know you've been experiencing bruxism, call and schedule an appointment with us. We will check over your teeth to make sure you haven't cracked or otherwise damaged any of them, and we can help you learn different ways to control your teeth grinding.
