How Does Salt Water Help Your Mouth Heal?

Posted on 5/10/2019 by Beautiful Smiles Office
How Does Salt Water Help Your Mouth Heal?If you have recently had a dental procedure, and a dentist recommended that you have a mouth rinse, you are not alone. Mouth rinses using salt have been used to help patients recover from a dental procedure, or as a way to make gum inflammation or canker sores hear more quickly. In fact, salt has been used as a way to prevent infection for thousands of years.

Salt water rinses have been used for a long time, and many people like salt water rinses to soothe their sore mouths, as well as sore throats. If you want more information about how salt water helps your mouth heal, keep reading.

Salt Water Rinses

Salt water rinses do two things to help your mouth heal from a procedure, from gum inflammation or from canker sores. First, salt water acts as a way to raise your mouth's pH, which means that your mouth becomes more alkaline. This is a harmful environment for bacteria that are in your mouth, because they require a more acidic environment to flourish. So bacteria are kept from developing, which works to help your mouth heal.

Also, many dentists don't recommend mouthwash with medicinal properties because those mouthwashes tend to irritate the mucous membranes, which makes it harder for your mouth to heal. Salt water rinses, because they contain natural elements already found in the body, are not as hard on a mouth that has undergone trauma through surgery or through inflammation.

To make a good salt water rinse, add a ½ teaspoon of salt to one cup of warm water. Do not make the water too hot, as very hot water works to inflame the mouth, rather than help it heal. If you have had surgery, you can rinse your mouth three to four times a day. You could also rinse frequently to help reduce inflammation and canker sores.
