 Fluoride treatments are a great way to strengthen and the protect the teeth while preventing cavities. They are easy to apply in our office, but afterwards, you should wait for at least 30 minutes to eat. This gives the fluoride a chance to work on your teeth without being washed away by foods, drinks, or saliva. What Happens during a Professional Fluoride Treatment in Our Office?We provide fluoride treatments in our office. These treatments involve a highly-concentrated fluoride varnish, gel, foam, or rinse. These treatments have significantly more fluoride than what is found in your toothpaste or municipal drinking water. Once applied to the teeth, you'll wait for that 30 minutes to drink or eat so that the treatment can fully absorb into the enamel. Can I Eat Whatever I Want? One question that we are frequently asked after a fluoride treatment is if the patient can eat or drink what they want. The answer isn't completely simple. You can eat or drink what you want after 30 minutes, but you need to make sure you avoid hot liquids. This includes hot cocoa, soup, and coffee. You should also avoid crunchy and hard foods like chips and nuts, as they could scrape off the fluoride. For optimal treatment, plan to leave the fluoride alone for 4-6 hours before you eat anything. Why is Fluoride So Important?Fluoride is a natural mineral that works to prevent cavities and build strong teeth. It supports healthy enamel and works to fight off harmful bacteria. If you are at a heightened risk for developing cavities, fluoride is especially important.
