The Flu Can Leave Lasting Pain in Your Teeth if Not Protected

Posted on 9/20/2019 by Beautiful Smiles Office
The Flu Can Leave Lasting Pain in Your Teeth if Not ProtectedThe flu is not an illness to take lightly. It can cause a variety of symptoms and is the reason that many die every year. While the symptoms of the flu typically last from 10 to 14 days, for some the impact of the flu lasts much longer.

Many people will run into problems with their teeth and oral health because of things that happened to their body while they had the flu. There are some things that you can do to protect your teeth when you have the flu.

How Does the Flu Impact Your Teeth

The flu comes with a variety of symptoms. While it is possible that the virus associated with the flu could damage the teeth, with most of the damage coming from the products used to deal with the symptoms and some of the ways the body reacts to the flu.

Some of the common products are decongestants, cough syrups and cough drops. All these products contain sugar and acids. Both of these things are bad for your teeth. You also may not drink enough water while you have the flu. Drinking water is one way to wash away the acids and sugars in the product.

Your body is not always happy when it has the flu and will react by throwing up. The bile in the throw up contains stomach acids that can eat away at the enamel of the teeth.

What to Do When You Have the Flu

The products can help you with the symptoms and you may not control when you throw up, but you can help your teeth by doing one thing more often when you have the flu. Brushing your teeth after you throw up and following your regular routine can help keep the acids and sugars at bay and can limit the damage to enamel of your teeth. Even if you don't feel like you want to do these things, it is worth the effort to help you avoid problems later.
