Composite Fillings: What You Need to Know and Why Patients Might Prefer Them

Composite Fillings: What You Need to Know and Why Patients Might Prefer ThemAt Beautiful Smiles, we can remove decay and restore small cavities with the placement of composite fillings. Known for its tooth coloring, the composite filling has come a long way in strength and durability, but many people may still be used to the amalgam fillings or have current ones that need to be replaced. If your old fillings could use replacement, we can give you something strong that will match your tooth, and also give you a flawless look that you will undoubtedly be impressed with.

What is composite filling?

A composite filling is a blend of quartz and other fillers such as silica particles and glass that is then mixed with resin. In the past, composite filling was thought to be a less durable product, but it has come a long way, with increased strength and long term durability.
Composite material starts off soft and pliable similar to putty in texture, allowing us to shape and manipulate it. Once it is in place, we then harden it with a specialized blue light that cures the material giving it its strong hold. With this material, we can make nearly invisible repairs on anterior and posterior teeth.

Why do patients love composite fillings?

There are several reasons that our patients ask for and prefer composite fillings, some of these include:

•  Composite fillings do not contain any mercury.
•  Composite filling is able to be shaded to match your teeth, helping the filling be nearly invisible in your mouth.
•  Composite material is able to restore your tooths shape and function.
•  Composite material is able to bond to your tooth, unlike amalgam, so we are able to remove only the decay or fractured portion of your tooth.
•  Composite is able to have a strong hold that will last for several year.
•  Composite is able to make multiple small repairs in your mouth, including repairing small chips.

Here at Beautiful Smiles, we understand that while repairing your oral health comes first, making sure you are happy with how you look is still important, which is why we offer composite fillings.
