What Happens When Bacteria Grow Beneath Your Gum Line?

Posted on 6/22/2020 by Beautiful Smiles Office
When bacteria starts growing under your gum line, you run the risk of developing gingivitis (a.k.a. gum disease). Left untreated, this can then cause the pocket areas around your teeth to become inflamed. Known as periodontitis, this results in your teeth pulling away from your gums, leaving small pockets that grow infected. As this happens, your body's immune system is left to fight off the infection.

What Causes Periodontitis

While it's easy to blame bacteria for causing periodontitis, there are many other reasons why this may also happen. For some people, it's genetic, meaning no matter how well you take care of your teeth, you're still going to get this disease. Fortunately, this is only true for a small number of people. Other people will never have a problem until their hormones start fluctuating. This is especially common for women who are undergoing puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.

Typically, most people fall ™victim™ to this disease because of the way they take care of their teeth. Whether they brush them too aggressively or don't take care of them at all, this can be a problem.

All these things will result in bacteria growing under your gum line. Once it starts growing there, things like using tobacco products and grinding or clenching your teeth will only make it worse.

Treating Periodontitis

Prevention is the best treatment for this disease but once it's already started, it's time to treat it by battling the bacteria that are growing under your gum line. This starts at home by developing good daily oral hygiene habits - daily brushing and flossing, followed by rinsing with a mouthwash. Additionally, you should see your dentist at least twice a year. While we can't reverse gum recession, we can help it from developing further. This is important so make sure you set up an appointment to talk to us about it soon
