Signs of a Dead Tooth

Posted on 1/25/2021 by Beautiful Smiles Office
Your teeth are one of the strongest parts of your body. However, they aren't invincible and this means they are susceptible to decay, diseases and even death.

A dying or dead tooth is as painful as it sounds and if you want to avoid that pain or even get a shot at saving your tooth, you need to be quick at spotting it and then receiving treatment. Here are some signs of a dead tooth you need to watch out for.

Discoloration

This is one of the most obvious signs that your tooth is dying. Since the blood supply is cut off to the tooth and the nerve ends are dying, this causes the tooth to change color. It can turn yellow, grey or black, much like a bruise on your body changes color. If left untreated, the discoloration only gets worse with time.

Pain

A dead tooth also results in immense pain in the tooth. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes, you might not experience any pain at all. That's why it is important to remember these other signs of a dead tooth to spot the condition early.

You might be wondering why there's any pain at all since the nerves are dying. The pain does not come entirely from the nerves. Rather, it comes from the periodontal membrane on the outside of the tooth as it is pressurized by the bacteria and or pus building up inside the pulp.

Along with the pain, you might also notice swelling on your mouth and gums.

Bad Breath and Bad Taste

Because of the dying tooth or a building infection, you might notice a bad taste in your mouth or bad breath despite brushing and flossing your teeth.

Pimple on the Gums

Another apparent sign of a dead tooth is when you get a pimple on your gums. This means the abcess inside your pulp has pushed through the bone and reached your gums.

If you notice any of these symptoms, you must consult a dentist right away. Contact Dr. James Yang and James Yang DDS at Beautiful Smiles to get your dead tooth checked and treated by expert dentists.
