Can Over Whitening Your Teeth Damage Your Tooth Enamel?

Posted on 2/8/2021 by Beautiful Smiles Office
You may think that keeping whitening strips on your teeth longer than the instructions say or using a bleaching product more often than is recommended, will make your teeth even whiter. The truth is actually the opposite: over-whitening your teeth can damage your enamel and lead to a variety of problems, including teeth that appear less white than before you started. Read on to learn more.

How Peroxide Damages Your Enamel

The bleaching ingredient found in most at-home tooth whitening products is peroxide. Peroxide is able to remove surface stains and discoloration from teeth, but it can be harmful if your teeth are exposed to it for too long. Peroxide eats away at the outer layer of your teeth, the enamel. When your enamel wears down, your teeth can become more sensitive and you have a greater risk of developing cavities and tooth decay.

In addition to these negative implications for your oral health, over-whitening can also have aesthetic side effects. The loss of enamel that occurs from prolonged exposure to peroxide can make your teeth appear translucent. This is because more of your dentin shows through the thin enamel, and dentin is yellowish in color. So, while you may be over-whitening in the hopes of achieving a whiter, brighter smile, you could in fact be left with the opposite.

How to Whiten Your Teeth Safely

While the bleaching gel we use to professionally whiten your teeth in our office contains a higher concentration of peroxide than at-home whitening products, the critical difference in safety level comes from our supervision and expertise. Even if you would prefer to whiten your teeth at home, we still recommend consulting with us first. We can give you information about how to use whitening products safely and answer any questions you might have. Plus, whitening products are not right for everyone, so it is important to let us know before trying them out. Call us today to learn about your teeth whitening options.
