3 Ways Oral Peircings Can Affect Your Oral Health

Posted on 4/26/2021 by Beautiful Smiles Office
Many people choose oral piercings as a way to express themselves. Commonly, these piercings are found in the tongue, cheeks, and/or cheeks and even though they may look cool, it is our responsibility to enlighten you about the risks associated with these piercings.

Gum Disease

Just as repetitively playing with piercings can damage/chip your teeth, this repetitive behavior could also damage your gums. When the gum tissue gets damaged, it makes it easier for bacteria in the mouth to find their way under your gums, and slowly, but surely, cause gum diseases.

As you know, gum diseases bring about a whole list of other oral health concerns such as tooth loss, chronic bad breath, heart diseases, and even some types of cancer.

Nerve Damage

Oral piercings do a lot more than just change your appearance. At first you may have difficulty speaking and chewing your food, until you finally get used to it. However, there is always a risk of your piercing accidentally hitting one of your complex network of facial nerves and causing long-term damage.

Infection

Since piercings involve making a hole in your body, there is always a risk of infection. Even though piercing infections tend to be minor at first, if they are left untreated, they can also become very serious or life-threatening.

You see, our mouth works as the ideal environment for bacteria to thrive and multiply. In other words, minor infections can quickly take the shape of a series of serious symptoms, starting from swelling. If the swelling spreads to the mouth, this could also cause difficulty in breathing.

The Final Word

If you're planning on getting an oral piercing, regular dental appointments and oral hygiene are crucial. Call us at (530) 206-9211 to schedule an appointment or to learn more about how you can reduce the risk of oral piercings.
