Do You Use Too Much Toothpaste?

Posted on 5/24/2021 by Beautiful Smiles Office
Do You Use Too Much Toothpaste?Using too much toothpaste can give you a false impression of a cleaner mouth. This is because of the overwhelming flavor that masks your mouth afterward. However, even if your mouth feels fresh after brushing with too much toothpaste, you risk developing cavities if your brushing technique is wrong. A smaller amount of toothpaste will still meet your teeth fluoride requirements and enable you to focus on brushing your teeth surfaces to remove plaque. Some even recommend brushing first without toothpaste to focus on removing plaque.

What Is the Recommended Toothpaste Amount for Healthy Teeth?

The amount of toothpaste you should use to brush your teeth will depend on your age. In children, use toothpaste the size of a grain of rice. This ensures your child does not ingest a lot of fluorides, given that kids are prone to swallowing toothpaste as they learn to brush their teeth. However, for children who know how to spit toothpaste and adults, a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is enough.

Why You Should Not Use Too Much Toothpaste

Too much toothpaste will do more harm than good, especially to children whose teeth are still developing. Too much fluoride increases the risk of dental fluorosis. The excess fluoride will also mix with other minerals in the teeth and affect their ratios, resulting in stained teeth. The surfaces of these teeth may also become rough due to excess fluoride. Rough textured teeth are more difficult to care for than smooth textured teeth, increasing tooth decay risk. Adults may not experience these effects since their teeth are fully developed. However, you should note that using extra toothpaste will not make your teeth cleaner, but only using the right brushing and flossing techniques. You should also schedule dental appointments for exams and cleanings to remove accumulated plaque for a healthy mouth.
