What Leaves My Mouth More Open to Cavities?

Posted on 9/21/2021 by Beautiful Smiles Office
What Leaves My Mouth More Open to Cavities?Sadly, the majority of the population will experience a cavity over the course of their lifetime. While some genetic and lifestyle factors make you more susceptible to cavities, you can be proactive in fighting tooth decay.

What is a Cavity?

A cavity is a damaged area in the hard surface of your teeth. Tiny openings or holes develop in your enamel due to the acid produced by the bacteria that eats leftover food debris on your teeth.

Reason You Could be More Susceptible to Cavities

If you have a sweet tooth, you are more susceptible to cavities. Sugar is a primary antagonist for the enamel on your teeth. If you are constantly eating sugary snacks or drinking sugary beverages, your teeth may struggle to combat tooth decay.

Secondly, the shape of your teeth influences your risk for cavities. If you have deep pits and fissures in the top surface of your teeth, you are more vulnerable to tooth decay. We recommend you consider sealants. These are plastic coatings used to seal off the biting surface of your teeth from harmful bacteria.

Another genetic factor is the strength of your enamel. This is the outer coating of your teeth. Some enamel is harder than others. If you have soft enamel on your teeth, it can more easily break down and form cavities.

Lastly, your mouth may be more open to cavities if you do not have proper saliva flow. The saliva in your mouth helps to remineralize and restore your teeth after you eat. If you have less saliva, you are more prone to cavities.
