Do I Need To Remove My Wisdom Teeth?

Posted on 12/10/2021 by Beautiful Smiles Office
Do I Need To Remove My Wisdom Teeth?Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to emerge on our dentures, usually between our late teenage years or early adulthood. Although it is often recommended to remove them from patients who suffer from discomfort because of them, there are plenty of people who grow them without much trouble. Would they still need to get them removed? The answer may vary from patient to patient, but there are a couple factors who are good to evaluate.

Should We Keep Our Wisdom Teeth?

Regarding whether a wisdom tooth extraction should be in order or not, that will mostly depend on the position they occupy once they are out of the gums. Some people have enough jawbone space for wisdom teeth, so their growth does not affect the adjacent teeth. In these cases, we can leave them in place, as long as they are growing normally and they do not cause us any discomfort.

However, there is a problem when wisdom teeth do not have enough room to grow, as they could start pushing adjacent teeth. In these cases, it is crucial to go to our office as soon as possible to avoid damage that could take long to fix if left untreated. We can perform wisdom teeth extraction, either by prevention or curatively, after a previous consultation to study your situation and determine the best course of action.

Risks of Keeping Wisdom Teeth

Retained wisdom teeth do not always cause symptoms. However, when retained wisdom teeth become infected or impacted, they can damage other teeth or cause different oral health problems. They may cause red or swollen gums, sensitive or bleeding gums, discomfort in the jaw, bad breath, and difficulty opening the mouth. If you or someone you know are experiencing any of these symptoms, please do not hesitate to contact us today.
