The 411 On TMJ

Posted on 4/25/2022 by Beautiful Smiles Office
The 411 On TMJThe temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the jaw joint serving as a hinge where it moves up and down, side to side, and forward and backward. Its mobility leads to its vulnerability. TMJ is subject to a condition known as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. This condition is painful but it can be treated. Sometimes, you may hear people refer to the disorder as TMJ, but strictly speaking, TMJ is the jaw joint itself. Even some professionals call it TMJ, but it should be called TMD or TMJ disorder.

Types of TMJ Disorder

There are three common types of temporomandibular joint disorder namely; muscular, joint and disc displacement, and arthritis. There are strong muscles situated on the side of your face and head. These are what make all the movement possible. Due to the overuse of these muscles, they can become tight and cause pain. Additionally, stress can contribute to grinding and clenching. Injuries can also impact these muscles. All these issues lead to the muscular type of TMJ disorder.

Moreover, there is a disc composed of soft tissues in the ball-and-socket of the jaw joint. Due to trauma like dislocation, you can experience joint and disc displacement, which is painful when chewing or when you open your mouth. With joint and disc displacement, there may be popping or clicking sounds heard as you move the jaw. Additionally, arthritis can affect various joints of the body, including the TMJ. This condition occurs when the cartilage deteriorates.

Should you experience any of these kinds of TMJ disorder, you should seek treatment. Visiting our office allows our dental professionals to diagnose the condition and come up with a TMJ/TMD treatment plan. Treating TMD involves different treatments depending on the cause and severity. The treatment can involve surgery or the use of oral appliances such as Invisalign clear braces.
