It's Better To Prevent A Cavity Than Fill One

Posted on 4/11/2022 by Beautiful Smiles Office
It's Better To Prevent A Cavity Than Fill OneFilling a tooth allows you to protect it and prevent further decay. Tooth decay arises when you don't maintain good oral health or if you frequently take sugary foods and drinks. Living with tooth decay or cavity can, at times, be troubling. A cavity can be extremely sensitive or even painful. Preventive dentistry is key to good oral health. When you prevent cavities, you avoid seeing a dentist for a restorative procedure like filling, crowning, or extraction and dental implants or bridges.

Maintaining Healthy Teeth and Gums

Brushing your teeth is easy and a basic requirement, but it is very crucial. You should brush your teeth two times every day, taking about two minutes each brushing session. When brushing use a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride to fight cavities and strengthen the teeth. Remember to change the toothbrush after every three months, or as soon as the bristles are worn out or frayed. Additionally, as you brush, do not forget the tongue. It is one of the parts of the mouth that are overlooked, but it tends to harbor bacteria that cause bad breath, gum disease, and tooth decay.

You also want to floss, as it goes hand-in-hand with brushing and allows you to get the gunk building up between the teeth. You can floss before or after brushing, it does not matter whether you do it first or after brushing. The most important thing is just to make sure you do it, at least once a day.

Moreover, eat a balanced diet and consider foods that promote the health of gums and teeth. Your teeth need nutrients like the other parts of the body. You also want to avoid sugar as it is the number culprit for gum disease and decay. Drinking water is crucial as it not only sweeps away bacteria from the mouth but helps hydrate the mouth. Most importantly, ensure you have regular checkups and cleanings. Visit us at our dental office to learn how to keep up with preventive dentistry for a healthy bite.
