Multiple Teeth Extraction What Happens During the Procedure?

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Beautiful Smiles Office
Multiple Teeth Extraction What Happens During the Procedure? If you need to have multiple teeth extracted, you may be wondering what happens during the procedure. It can be a little scary to think about, but knowing what to expect can help put your mind at ease. Here are the basic steps of multiple teeth extraction.

Anesthetic is Administered

The initial step of the procedure is numbing the area around the teeth or teeth that will be extracted. It is done using an anesthetic, which can be given in various ways. The most common method is injecting a local anesthetic into your gum tissue to numb the area. You may also be given nitrous oxide, inhaled through a mask, making you feel relaxed. Some people may require additional sedation if they have a large amount of dental work done or fear needles. You will be awake during the procedure, but you should not feel any pain.

The Teeth Are Removed

Once the mouth area is numb, the dentist will use special instruments to loosen the teeth and then remove them. The dental process takes less than 30 minutes, but it may take longer if you have multiple teeth extracted or if the teeth are impacted. Impacted teeth have not erupted through the gum line or have only partially erupted. Impacted teeth may require more time and effort to remove. After the teeth are extracted, a blood clot usually forms in the empty socket. The socket will be packed with gauze to help stop the bleeding. You may feel some pressure during the procedure, but you should not feel any pain.

The Gauze Is Removed

After the procedure, the dentist will give a gauze to bite on to help stop the bleeding. You may have to bite on the gauze for up to 45 minutes. Once the bleeding has stopped, you can remove the gauze. The dentist will give you instructions on how to take care of your mouth after the procedure.
