What to Do About a Knocked-out Tooth?

Posted on 6/20/2022 by Beautiful Smiles Office
What to Do About a Knocked-out Tooth? It is not unusual to lose a tooth during an accident or contact sports. Also, it is not something you want to ignore. A knocked-out tooth is a dental emergency and a pretty scary experience. If it happens to you, do not panic. Visiting a dentist without delay and taking timely action can save your tooth.

What To Do If Your Tooth is Knocked Out?

The first thing you need to do is find the tooth. If it is not visible, gently insert your fingers into your mouth and feel around for it. Once you find the tooth, hold it by the crown (the white part that's usually visible in your mouth) and avoid touching the root. If the root is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or water. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue. If possible, try to reinsert the tooth into its socket. If that is not possible, put the tooth in a cup of milk or water. Then, see a dentist right away. Time is of the essence when it comes to a knocked-out tooth.

What Will a Dentist Do?

Once you have located the tooth and rinsed it off, your dentist will determine if they can replant the tooth. If so, the next step is to clean the area around the tooth socket gently. Your tooth will then be inserted back into its socket and splinted to adjacent teeth. This helps keep the tooth stable while it heals. In some cases, you may need surgery to replant the tooth. If the tooth cannot be replanted, you have two options: a dental implant or a bridge. Dental implants are artificial roots placed into your jawbone to support a replacement tooth. A bridge is created by placing crowns on the teeth next to the space left by the missing tooth. The replacement tooth is then attached to the crowns.

If you have a knocked-out tooth, do not delay getting to a dentist. Timely treatment can mean the difference between saving and losing your tooth.
